Invisible Furniture by July Zhou
July Zhou is a Beijing based contemporary Chinese artist who specializes in masterly hand-crafted Lucite furniture inspired by classic Ming dynasty design.
Growing up during the Cultural Revolution, July's journey to success took many twists and turns – from being arrested and surviving two death sentences to writing screen plays and working with late director, Alan Pakula. Throughout, July never gave up on his childhood dream of being an artist. At 60, he realized his aspirations and began to design furniture.
Collaborating with a skilled team of artisans, July thermoforms, thermobends, hand-carves, and hand polishes each piece. The translucency of the Lucite highlights the elegance of Chinese design, forgoing the usual market standbys of wood type and age.
