Here, we had the honor to show a collection of taihu spirit stones, vessels, and sculpture.<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t tell the story of orchids in Asia with items from the 21st century. It\u2019s a welcome burst of color and warmth in the middle of winter, and a reminder that spring is on its way.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagobotanic.org\/orchid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Asia in Bloom<\/em><\/a>, pairs exotic orchids with Chinese, Japanese and Southeast Asian objects on loan from PAGODA RED. An image of a Japanese fence with horizontal bamboo slats inspired an installation that recalls classical Japanese teahouses, while writings on the medicinal uses of orchids led to a display of Chinese mortars, pestles and apothecary jars. It was an a-ha moment for me to see that traditional Japanese garments were rendered with non-Asian orchids. It speaks to the fact that orchids have been heavily traded for a long time,\u201d says Hutchison.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_1016\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/t\/chicago-botanic-garden-orchid-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1016\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1016 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ChicagoBotanicGarden-DSC_6431.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"711\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1016\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/ti\/furniture-outdoor\/celestial-cloud-architectual-object\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celestial Cloud Architectural Object, circa 1750<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Every culture has orchids that go in and out of style. In our current Western moment, the orchid that\u2019s reached peak ubiquity is the Phalaenopsis, or moth orchid. When selecting orchids for your home, Hutchison urges people to look beyond the obvious.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere are so many varieties. Oncidiums\u2014or dancing ladies\u2014come in a wide range of shapes and colors: greens, yellows, browns, and reds. You don\u2019t have to display them in a traditional orchid vase, you can use driftwood or find an unconventional way to display them on vintage pieces. I love orchids in cut flower arrangements with bromeliads. They can be calm or vibrant.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_1013\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/t\/chicago-botanic-garden-orchid-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1013\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1013 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ChicagoBotanicGarden-DSC_6354.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"719\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A collection of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/ti\/furniture-outdoor\/glazed-relief-jar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monumental Floral Relief Vessels<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>When choosing the containers for the orchid show, Hutchison gravitated towards pieces rich in history and narrative. A hand-carved limestone Japanese Buddha (c. 1900) receives daily orchid offerings from the garden staff, just as it would have in a temple or home garden.
