\u201cWe\u2019re always looking to incorporate the hand.\u201d So says interior designer Marguerite Rodgers<\/a>, of her eponymous Philadelphia firm. While many designers are known for discovering and celebrating fine craftsmanship, Marguerite is an accomplished maker in her own right. Already a skilled seamstress by the time she enrolled in college, she planned to become a fashion designer. But after discovering that she loved working with wood far more than needle and thread, she changed course. First, opening her own furniture making shop, and later, constructing an entire post-and-beam barn using eighteenth-century building techniques.<\/p>\n

Commissions for both furniture and building projects soon followed, keeping her busy through graduation and beyond. Since then, her exacting eye has helped shape the look of countless private residences, hotels and restaurants.<\/p>\n

These days, Marguerite and her team frequently design one-of-a-kind pieces tailored to suit the client\u2019s aesthetic and lifestyle. Besides freeing them from needing to shop for that just-right piece, the approach allows collaboration with top area artisans. \u201cThere is custom work in every room we do,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

The sophisticated dining room above was created for a couple who purchased a centrally-located home for their large, far-flung family to gather on holidays. \u201cWe wanted to do something chic and urban but also very comfortable and relaxing,\u201d says Marguerite. The table is custom, inspired by an antique, and adapted with celebratory meals in mind. Six leaves allow it to quickly transform, making it versatile enough for get-togethers of any size. Meanwhile, the dining chairs are vintage, and the Chrysanthemum Stone<\/a> (on sideboard) was formed hundreds of millions of years ago but found in modern times.<\/p>\n

“Our work is always eclectic, and it\u2019s very important to us that it be tactile and organic, incorporating luxurious materials and art,”\u00a0says Marguerite. “We consider art to be modern art as well as ancient, hand-crafted objects that exhibit warmth and character.”<\/p>\n

A cache of vintage lantern frames\u2014won at auction, and reinvented with each iteration\u2014have found their way into many of Marguerite\u2019s projects. \u201cWe\u2019ve made them with mica, glass, sandblasted glass, and woven bamboo,\u201d says Marguerite. An example in clear glass hangs above, in front of a custom cabinet inspired by Japanese Tansu.<\/p>\n

The alchemy of old, new and custom is evident even in Marguerite\u2019s own home. In her powder room (above), the hand painted walls tell a moving, ultra-personal tale. \u201cWe adopted our daughter (now 15) from China,\u201d she explains. \u201cThis mural represented our travels to her. I have an artist, who I gave photographs and books, and I told him about our trip up the river.\u201d Meanwhile, the vanity is an Asian antique and the tankless commode is modern.<\/p>\n

In the frame above, what appear to be scholars’ stones are actually reverse paintings done by the same trusted muralist. In the foreground are Asian antiques and decorative objects, while the wood and lacquer cabinet at the end of the hallway is a modern work by designer Juin Ho.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore art school, I’d been more of a crafts person,” says Marguerite. “I was a seamstress, and I made batik and patterns, but I didn\u2019t draw much. And I realized that I needed that eye. So I used to sit in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and draw. I spent most of my time in the Chinese section, and I would spend hours just sketching a table leg. I was always drawn to the simplicity of the lines, and the craft. Whether it’s lacquer baskets, textiles, roots, stone, porcelain, it\u2019s thousands of years of craft.”<\/p>\n

The influence is apparent in her work, but manages never to feel heavy-handed. “My own home is filled with Asian antiques, but it\u2019s a very modern home,” she says. “You don\u2019t feel like you are in some Asian museum at all.”<\/p>\n

For the Bahamas changing room above, Marguerite discovered the bird figurines and had them turned them into whimsical lamps. The vanity was crafted from two antique cabinets.\u00a0 “I love getting to work with different artisans. They are always bringing something to the table we might not have thought of,” she says. “You can\u2019t be masters of every trade, so wonderful things come out of those collaborations. I love the process. It\u2019s the collaborative dialog of people who make stuff.”<\/p>\n
