They were chosen to inspire poetry and landscape paintings, though later on they were collected simply for their natural beauty and often resided next to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/items\/flora-and-fauna-inkstone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ink slabs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/items\/horn-libation-cup-8cf3ddad-9a4b-4a57-98f6-080bfd4d9e1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">libation cups<\/a> and other tools of the scholar.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beauty wasn\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exactly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the eye of the beholder, though.\u00a0Thinness (\u7626 sh\u00f2u), perforations (\u6f0f l\u00f2u), openness (\u900f t\u00f2u) and wrinkling (\u76ba zh\u00f2u) soon became the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/listings\/2000\/world-of-scholars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four aesthetic criteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0upon which these pieces were judged. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4521\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4521\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4521 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Lingbi_Stone_ZZZ101J_001-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Lingbi_Stone_ZZZ101J_001-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Lingbi_Stone_ZZZ101J_001-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Lingbi_Stone_ZZZ101J_001-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Lingbi_Stone_ZZZ101J_001-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Lingbi_Stone_ZZZ101J_001-540x540.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4521\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/ti\/meditation-stones\/lingbi-stone-269d7161-96cd-4cec-8cc0-6073c155dc2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Winged Guardian Lingbi Scholar&#8217;s Rock<\/a> | W: 17&#8243; D: 6&#8243; H: 14&#8243;<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scholar\u2019s rock might even\u00a0travel with the artist for inspiration when painting mountain scenes\u2014an ancient version of Googling \u201cmajestic mountains.\u201d Sometimes referred to as \u201cportable mountains,\u201d these rocks were complex, wild, and rugged. Characteristic of Chinese aesthetics, the more irregular and eroded these rocks appeared to be (even if human enhancement may have, at times, played a hand), the more desirable they were. Stones like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/items\/peony-meditation-stone-m2011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peony<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pagodared.com\/items\/chrysanthemum-stones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chrysanthemum<\/a> revealed incredible bursts of white which resembled flowers (hence the name). Many rocks were named after the creatures and habitats they mimicked. And all were a little bit special in their own way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, Googling \u201cportable mountains\u201d just doesn\u2019t cut it.
