Butterfly & Gourd Charm Ring

Dated to the late 19th century, this silver charm ring was crafted by the Miao peoples of the Guizhou province and was believed to protect the wearer from bad luck and malevolent spirits. The ring is decorated with a pierced, low relief design of a round gourd and a butterfly, surrounded by clouds and small flowers. This motif of a butterfly and a gourd was popular during the Qing dynasty and conveys blessings for a large family with many sons. A short chain hangs from the face of the ring, strung with a small charm of a five-petal flower and ending in an elegant, teardrop bell.
