In traditional Chinese medicine, drugs alone could not cure a person’s illness. A physician would strive to balance a patient's vital energy, or yin and yang - a person is believed to become ill when these two aspects lose harmony. The specialty herbs and medicinal ingredients used to bring a patient’s energies back into balance were stored in apothecary jars like this beautiful white one, which lined the walls of medicine shops.
