Stools indicated power, status, and lines of succession in traditional Ashanti culture. The flat base, curved seat, and ridged supports reference the Ashanti King Stool. While most Ashanti woodworkers carved the central support into a symbol or animal, this maker went with a more realistic drum, even including two staving mallets. Representing power and leadership, drums were associated with respected members of the tribe. The surfaces have acquired fantastic character with time and use. We particularly love the asymmetry of the upward reach of the top.

“I am particularly fond of PAGODA RED as we have known the family for so long. Betsy is a professional in every way and her intelligent taste comes from a long line of family knowledge in the arts. She and her team are the very best to work with and we find treasures with every visit!”
