A private form of painting that emerged in Rajasthan, India during the 16th-17th centuries, miniature paintings were often kept in books or albums and served to illustrate the accompanying texts beautifully scripted in calligraphy. This remarkable example depicts a heated battle scene alive with clashing soldiers on horseback. The fusion of Indian, Islamic, Persian, and to some extent Chinese influence is seen in the text and mountainous landscape, with a characteristic high horizon and rocky outcroppings. Using pigments derived from minerals, vegetables, and precious stones, the painting is awash in brilliant color. It is matted behind glass in a gentle gilt frame.
