Sculpted by artisans in China's Shanxi province, this vessel has a smoky black exterior on one side that transitions into a golden brown on the other. The squat clay vessel has a quiet simplicity, shaped with balanced proportions and an undecorated, unglazed surface. Charged with the humble task of storing dry goods, the earthenware jar has a wide mouth, short neck and broad shoulders that narrow gently towards the base. Ideal today as an indoor planter or catch-all, the pot has a natural beauty, patterned only by smoke patterns left during firing and the brushed texture of its speckled slip clay finish.
