Gilt Lacquer Carrying Box

This early 20th century painted box was originally used as a portable traveling container, especially used for meals, snacks, and food offerings. Decorated with motifs of marriage and happiness, the box was likely a gift for a pair of newlyweds, presented as part of a wedding ceremony.

The wooden box is crafted with eight sides, a lucky number believed to bring prosperity. Brushed atop layers of red and black lacquer are scenes of magpies resting on flowering branches, a common wedding motif for double happiness. The lid is painted with two young boys, one carrying a peach branch, symbolizing a blessing of longevity. Gilt chrysanthemums, ruyi, and scrollwork fill the gaps. Dense with symbolism, this painted carrying box lives on as a wonderfully storied decorative object.
