Gnarled Brush Pot

A brush pot, such as this one made in Hainan province, may once have sat on the desk of a learned scholar next to his brushes, inkpot, and inkstone. Made of rustic, gnarled wood, the brush pot would have brought to mind ancient trees depicted in Chinese art that symbolized the wisdom of great sages.
