Dated to the early 20th century, this fine calligraphy brush would have been an essential tool for a Qing-dynasty scholar-official, used to draft official documents or compose poetry. A scholar's tools were symbols of his status and were frequently made to the individual's exacting specifications. While many brushes in our collection were highly decorated with symbolic and geometric motifs, this brush is simple and restrained. Clearly, the scholar that once owned this brush appreciated the fine beauty that emerges from a singularly crafted, wonderfully polished utilitarian object.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
