Dated to the early 20th century, this wine table has a classic design, featuring rounded legs, double side stretchers, simple spandrels, and humpback stretchers beneath each apron. Placed throughout the Qing-dynasty home, recessed leg side tables such as this were used for elevating instruments, serving food or tea, or as a gathering spot for drinking rice wine. The narrow form of this particular table suggests it may have been used as an altar for ancestor worship, laden with offerings and incense. Cloaked in a rich, dark lacquer finish, this elmwood table is ideal as a console or side table in the modern home.
