Densely carved with an energetic landscape, this pierced panel was originally inserted to the ornate frame of a 19th-century canopy bed. Likely a scene from a classic Chinese novel, the panel depicts robed officials surrounded by young attendants.

Carved to achieve a sense of depth, the scene is framed by rocky outcroppings and a canopy of trees. Architectural elements blend into the natural surroundings, including tall columns, lattice windows, and buildings in the distance. Presented on its own as a work of sculpture, this petite carved panel offers a Qing-dynasty perspective of an idealized past.
