First developed during the Tang dynasty, Chinese blue-and-white porcelain has been treasured by collectors for centuries. Renowned for its painterly decoration and the beautiful contrast of rich blue on white, this unique ceramic style begins with a design painted with a grayish-black, cobalt-based pigment that turns a brilliant blue upon firing.

This blue-and-white ginger jar stands tall with broad shoulders that taper to a splayed base. Bordered by a simple meander at the neck, the jar is decorated with a dense pattern of orchid blossoms and trailing vines. On each side of the jar, the intricate decorations swirl around a central 囍 symbol for "double happiness," a traditional symbol of marriage and conjugal bliss.
