A 19th-century limestone column base carved in relief with mythical qilin, chimeric animals from Chinese mythology described as having the head of a dragon, the body of a tiger, the scales of a fish, and the antlers of a deer. They're considered to be good omens and potent symbols of joy, longevity, prosperity, and wisdom.

Extremely gentle creatures, qilin carefully avoid treading upon any living being, no matter how small. To avoid harming even one blade of grass, these qilin are resting upon plumes of swirling clouds summoned from their own mouths.

The qilin that adorn this pedestal base are shown alongside plants and trees representing longevity, including pine trees, bamboo, chrysanthemum and lingzhi fungus. The column base finds its place in the modern home as a sculptural object, as a garden ornament or as the ultimate way to elevate a planter or work of art.
