This shallow console table was crafted over 150 years ago in China's Fujian province, and was originally used as an altar table storing incense and other offerings. Elegantly constructed with mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques, the altar is subtly decorated with exquisite inlaid decorations of scholars' objects, flowers, and figures. Amidst the decorations are censers burning incense, brush pots with calligraphy brushes, bulb pots with narcissus flowers, and rootwood plant stands bearing graceful bouquets. The carefully laid decoration contrasts the warm glow of the table's lindenwood and camphor construction, and offers the same storied charm as a finely painted table.
