Trunks and storage chests were the most ubiquitous form of household storage throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties. Used to store clothes, linens, kitchen utensils, and other miscellaneous items, trunks were found in every room in the home and were often stacked on top of one another.

This early 20th century trunk is crafted of poplar wood and finished with layers of dark brown lacquer. The front is painted with a vase filled with peonies, surrounded by butterflies, persimmons, and Buddha's hand citrons. Text painted beside the still life reads "when flowers open, wealth and health soon follow." With squat proportions and charming decoration, this chest is the perfect place to stow books, keepsakes, and other odds and ends.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
