During winter in the colder provinces of China, life revolved around the kang, a heated brick platform that household members would sit or recline upon. Placed on top of the kang, low tables provided a convenient surface for dining, drinking tea, or playing games.

This early 20th-century kang table is elaborately decorated on all sides with painted floral scrollwork and geometric meanders. The top is decorated with finely carved stone and lacquer inlay of ancient bronzes, scholars' objects, and vases bearing fruits and flowering branches. The carvings are inlaid onto a slightly recessed tabletop and protected by glass for use as an everyday surface. Beautifully crafted with intricate detail, this painted table looks striking in modern interiors as a statement-making coffee table or end table.
