This impressive 19th-century altar table from northern China features cloud-form carved spandrels and beautiful lattice side panels. The curvilinear latticework is patterned to resemble delicate plum blossoms, common symbols of winter and longevity. As indicated by the everted flanges that frame the expansive tabletop, this table was likely originally the domestic altar used for family worship in a Qing-dynasty home. Its original black lacquer was hand-applied, layer upon layer, to achieve a rich mirror gloss. Over time, the lacquer has softened to the current richly aged finish.
