With clean lines and a dark lacquer finish, this small square corner cabinet provides the perfect canvas for intricate, hand-painted gilt decoration. Dated to the mid-19th century, the low chest is crafted of elmwood with a single interior shelf and is cloaked in layer upon layer of glossy black lacquer. The cabinet front is delicately brushed with gold pigment atop red lacquer linework, now softly faded from years of use. The doors are painted with round medallions of various things of beauty, including flowers, waterside landscapes, songbirds, offering fruits, and deer - symbols of longevity. The surrounding border is decorated with floral scrollwork and a repeating geometric pattern. Designed for general storage in the Qing-dynasty home, this chest is perfect as a side table or nightstand, filled with a collection of contemporary art books or antique tomes.

Minor repairs to peeling lacquer.
