Ming Painting of Silver Pheasants and Winter Flowers

A grand example of Chinese calligraphy painting, this large bird-and-flower painting dates to the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and depicts a quiet winter scene of two silver pheasants surrounded by plum blossoms, camellia, and snowy bamboo. Appreciated for their beauty and ability to withstand harsh weather, these cold season flowers are symbols of longevity, joy and prosperity. Smaller birds look on from branches overhead and a rushing waterfall flows in the distance. The natural setting is painted in a dark palette for a moody atmosphere, with the occasional pop of white and red, and enclosed by a gold silk brocade border. The painting is mounted on wood board and set within an early 20th century wood frame.
