In a traditional Chinese home, a long narrow table with everted flanges is placed in the main hall and set with beautiful objects such as instruments, flowers, or porcelains. Often referred to as altar tables, these slender tables are also used as a domestic altars for familial ancestor worship, laden with incense, figures, and offerings.

This recessed-leg altar table dates to the mid-19th century and is elegantly designed with balanced proportions and minimal ornamentation. The table features a plank-top surface with everted ends, simple scrolled spandrels, and straight legs inset with cutout side panels. A layer of red lacquer cloaks the exterior, now beautifully worn with subtle crazing and a smooth patina.
