Dated to the early 20th-century, these upright display shelves are constructed with lightweight frames, open sides, and low slatted railings enclosing each shelf. The pair's clean lines are accentuated by a dark brown-black finish, lightly faded at the edges from a century of use.

Once the centerpiece of a Qing-dynasty scholar’s studio, these open shelves were ideal for displaying stacks of books, scholars' rocks, precious antiques, and other scholarly implements. With streamlined sophistication, the timeless design of these bookcases holds its own in a contemporary office or living room.
