This 19th-century column base likely figured into the grand and imposing surroundings of a Qing-dynasty courtyard, supporting a large wooden beam that flanked an entry or walkway. Shaped from solid limestone, the column base has a two-piece, square-to-round design and is carved in low relief with intricate detail.

The square base is carved to resemble a Chinese waisted stool, with short cabriole legs, a scrolled apron and an overhung top. Triangle forms imitate an embroidered cloth draped over the sides, subtly etched with two large bats, symbols of happiness and blessings to come.

The square base is surmounted by a short lotus flower plinth, which in turn supports a removable, round pedestal. Sculpted to resemble a traditional drum, the stone pedestal is carved with floral scrollwork and swirling dragons, bordered by a pattern of raised dots that imitate the nails used to stretch hide top across an actual drum.

Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art.

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
