Coral & Malachite Inlaid Snuff Bottle

A mixture of finely powdered tobacco, herbs, and spices, snuff was introduced to China in the 17th century by Western diplomats. Initially reserved for ranking members of Qing-dynasty society, the practice provided an opportunity to display one's refined aesthetic through collectible snuff containers.

This 19th-century brass snuff bottle speaks to a metalworking tradition favored in northern China, Mongolia or Tibet. The sides of the bottle are decorated with floral medallions of red coral and malachite in a bezel setting, enclosed by borders of granulated beads and twisted wire. The surrounding surface is patterned with a chased design of leafy foliage and inlaid gemstone flower petals. The lid is decorated with a matching design of inlaid gems and is complete with the original metal spoon.
