This cast bronze bracelet or anklet is a fine example of African pre-colonization trade currency, attributed to the Dan people of Cote d'Ivoire and Liberia. Worn on the ankle or wrist as a beautiful adornment and indication of one's status, these currencies were used for major transactions, whether a large market purchase, land acquisition, or as part of a marriage dowry.

The anklet is comprised of a rope-form band and accented with three spherical bells that emit a jingling sound with each step. The jewelry was cast of bronze alloy using the lost-wax method, allowing the artist to texture the surface of each bell with an intricate pattern of concentric rings. An impressive example of African metalwork, we've elevated this currency on a custom steel mount for display as a timeless sculptural object.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
