This 19th-century drum form stool is assembled with traditional stave and hoop construction, with two bands of decorative nail heads. Painted in red and gold, two colors thought to bring good luck, the stool is adorned with low-relief carvings of scholars' rocks, butterflies, and chrysanthemums, symbols of longevity. The stool is framed by faux handles carved as bats, symbols of happiness, and the removable lid is carved with bamboo leaves and a golden coin symbol for prosperity. This powerful series of blessings has been lacquered to a brilliant sheen, preserving their vibrancy for centuries.
