Beautifully commemorated on this oval ginger jar, censers have been used for thousands of years in Chinese culture as a part of funeral rites or prayer offerings. Filled with dried aromatic plants and essential oils, the censer issued fragrant smoke that forged a connection to the spiritual realm.

This late Qing-dynasty jar pays colorful tribute to the ancient vessel form in style of famille rose enamelware. Sometimes referred to as "yangcai" or "foreign colors," the famille rose style emerged during the 18th century and employs a pastel palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favors roses and pinks. With its intricate decoration and fanciful coloring, this famille rose baluster jar is a delightful way to brighten up any interior.
