Famille Rose Scholarly Gathering Baluster Jar

During the 18th century, Europeans provided an eager market for Chinese export porcelain, especially the colorful and fanciful ware known as “famille rose.” Named for a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favored roses and pinks, famille rose porcelain ware was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as imperial porcelain but designed for Western tastes.

This famille rose baluster jar is painted with two figural panels depicting scenes of courtly life. On one side, a procession of finely dressed men passes through the countryside on horseback, and on the other, a group of scholar officials relax in the home, the scene framed as though peering in from the courtyard. The surrounding areas are densely patterned with ripe fruits and flower blossoms, in turn bordered by rectangular lappets at the base and auspicious ruyi at the neck. The lid is painted with floral arrangements and scholars' objects and a red chrysanthemum decorates the knob. With its vibrant play of colors and joyous decoration, this jar is a delightful way to add color and texture to any interior.
