The connection between love and embroidery is nowhere stronger than among the minority peoples of China. Hand-stitched by a mother herself or gifted by the women in her family, the baby carrier not only keeps the baby close, it acts as a visual reminder of a family's love and devotion.

This embroidered textile panel dates to the early 20th century and is attributed to a Miao woman of Southern China. Originally used as a baby carrier or an ornamental waistband, the panel is comprised of strip woven cotton and intricately embroidered with silk. The textile is patterned with alternating designs of traditional motifs, including maple trees, swirling waves, and geometric meanders. Two silk panels bisect the embroidery, in turn embroidered with scrollwork of coins and lotus flowers. Set within a simple frame for display, this embroidered baby carrier is a beautiful example of Chinese minority textile art.

Exposure to water has caused the pink coloring of certain threads to bleed into surrounding panels.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
