This red lacquer cabinet is an excellent example of the rich, decorative style of cabinetry built during the 19th century in Shanxi Province. Traces of the original gilt paintings depicting vases with auspicious flowers remain. The flush-panel doors are designed with extended dowels at the top and bottom that ingeniously fit into the frame, freeing the cabinet of the need for distracting surface-mounted hinges. The intricately carved apron with a central dragon motif softens its angularity.
