As the embodiment of compassion, Guanyin is the most beloved bodhisattva, or enlightened being, in China. Created in northern China, this limestone carving is identifiable as Guanyin by the figure’s elaborate headdress and relaxed posture, known as “royal ease.” With a full-moon face, downcast eyes, and delicate features, this figure is the embodiment of calm and elegance. We particularly love the naturalism and strength projected in her unusually heavy set legs. A central figure in Buddhism, Guanyin can take many forms depending on the devotee’s needs and is often invoked to encourage fertility or alleviate suffering. Traces of pigment and gold leaf indicate that the figure was once lavished with vibrant color.
