As though slicked with oil, an inky black glaze drenches the high shoulders and arched double strap handles of this tapered kitchen vessel. The 19th-century ceramic jar was once used to prepare and store soy sauce in a Qing-dynasty kitchen, as evidenced by its interior glaze. With rich tonality, the lustrous dark glaze gives the jar a glassy appearance and drips beautifully over the unfinished round base.
