The ideas for Gordon Chandler’s provocative sculptures evolve from immediate and local influences that often seem random and accidental. No wonder then that rusted and misshapen scraps of discarded metal star in many of his works. In this piece a scrap of metal is split down the center, with the sides folded outward to suggest a collar. The split reveals a “lining” of stamped steel marked by a rivted-on silver “label.” Rectangular in shape and cut to exploit the original paint for its graphic potential, the piece has the look of a neatly folded polo shirt. With an eye to the aesthetic possibilities of this humble material, Chandler invests the steel with sculptural fluidity and a wry sense of form. Each piece contains a unique serial number specific to the piece.
