This ancient sculpture depicts a Chinese soldier astride his horse. The style is representative of Western Han Dynasty (206 BC—9 AD) equestrians from the Xian region of China. Making this statue would have taken skill: first the terra cotta was molded, then the details were engraved, finally the pigments—a mixture of water and powder minerals—were added after firing.
