This porcelain vase from the early 20th-century is sculpted to a classic phoenix-tail silhouette and decorated on all sides with mythical fu lions. Also known as shizi or foo dogs, fu lions are believed to be benevolent protectors against evil spirits and misfortune. Hand-painted with sinuous linework and stippled shading, the lions are rendered in red-orange enamel atop a cool white field, surrounded by abstract flourishes and decorative calligraphy.

Stamped with the reign mark of the Shunzhi Emperor (1644-1661).
