This round bamboo basket is an early 20th century flower basket (hanakago) designed especially for ikebana, the Japanese art of floral arrangement. Reminiscent of a bird's nest, the basket has a low, rounded form without a handle and is beautifully woven with an expressive, freeform pattern. The basket is formed of thin strips of smoked bamboo (susutake), a desirable material that acquires a dark, red-brown color by drying out slowly above a smoky indoor hearth. Used to contrast and anchor delicate flowers, the basket is a beautiful example of a traditional Japanese art form.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
