Carved from a single block of elmwood, this unusual piece was once part of a joist supporting a Qing-dynasty building. Notches in the wood give the table its unique shape and reveal the interlocking joinery techniques employed in traditional Chinese construction. A century of weathering has cloaked the wood's raw texture in a rich patina, accentuating the expressive grain patterns. Once purely functional, the piece takes on new life re-imagined as a sculptural stool or side table.
