Created in China's Shanxi province in the early 19th century, this impressive altar table with everted ends features side panels carved with auspicious ruyi motifs, emblems of longevity and immortality. The table's straight legs are topped by hand-carved spandrels resembling billowing clouds. Constructed with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques, the elmwood table is still cloaked in its original black lacquer finish, lustrously-aged with fantastic character.
