A decorative technique first adopted in China in the early Ming dynasty (1368-1644), cloisonné is achieved by outlining intricate patterns with thin strips of metal, which are then filled with colorful materials such as vitreous enamel, cut glass or gemstones. This sculptural example is a large cloisonné box delightfully shaped in the form of a frog and decorated with an allover design of fish & flora.

A celebration of color, the cloisonné frog is densely patterned with seaweed, bubbles and underwater creatures such as tadpoles, frogs, shrimps and snails. A glimpse at life teeming just under the surface, the design is enameled in upbeat shades of red, green, yellow and blue and set against a watery blue field. A teeny frog resting on a bright green lily pad comprises the lid, surmounting the lively design as though floating on the water's surface.
