Chinese photographer Liu Zheng began traveling throughout China in 1994, eager to present a comprehensive view of Chinese society at a moment of great social and cultural change. The resulting series “The Chinese,” culled from some 10,000 photographs, presents a people negotiating traditional culture amidst rapid modernization, from the wealthiest members of society to those living on the fringe. In this striking image from 1995, convicts queued up to get their rations of water react to the camera’s flash, their shadowy existence fleetingly illuminated.

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
