This monumental coffer was made in China’s Shanxi Province and is emblematic of 19th century Chinese furniture design: thoughtful proportions, select timbers, solid brass hardware and masterful mortise and tenon joinery. The flush panel doors were designed with extended dowels at the top and bottom that ingeniously fit into the upper and lower frames. The lacquer has aged beautifully over time, the timber revealing itself from within, lending great character to the original finish. One hundred and fifty years ago, the chest might have served as a family’s altar, where they paid respects to their ancestors. It would also have provided necessary storage, concealing everything from silks and embroidery to household tools.

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
