Wide enough to seat three to four people, this ornate bench was likely made as shared seating for live performances, such as operas, plays, and ceremonies. Clearly intended for special occasions, the bench is decorated with symbolic carvings and finished with dark red lacquer and metallic pigments.

Each leg is carved with the expressive face of a fu dog, traditional protectors against evil spirits and misfortune. On the aprons, two smaller fu dogs play with an embroidered ball wrapped in ribbons, a motif for joy and good fortune. The surrounding panels are carved with auspicious flowers, including chrysanthemums for longevity and peonies for love. Beautifully faded from a century of use, this grand bench is wonderful as an eye-catching coffee table or a comfortable seat in a hallway or entry.

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
