The Mangbetu people focused on highly realistic art forms. Two aspects of the tribe's traditional culture can be seen in this handled jug—the allusion to tall coiffured hair, and the tribal ritual of elongating heads during growth. This water jug represents a mature individual after elongation. The ceramicist masterfully incorporated these features into a traditional pot form, allowing for a convenient spout, grip, and body, all while preserving the fine facial expression and clearly defined teeth of the person depicted.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
