Nupe women were well-known for their skill in shaping drinking vessels. Everyday objects, like this water vessel, received detailed attention. The vessel's varied textures come from its functional design. The geometric patterns were engraved to give the drinker a better grip, creating intricate, hand-worn textures. Many examples of this style feature an upturned lip, a convenient form for a multitude of uses. Tapering to a tighter spout marks this as a drinking vessel, easier to sip from than broader pots. This is an exceptional example for this difference in style, slight lean in form, and fantastic surface markings and coloration.
