Popular in northern China, an ice box such as this would have been a summertime staple in the courtyard homes of the Qing-dynasty elite. Lined with pewter, the box was loaded with ice blocks and used like a modern-day air conditioner, a perforated lid allowing for the gradual release of cool air. This fine example is elevated by square display stand and decorated with painted engravings of bamboo, plum blossoms, and tall grasses. A relic of a bygone era, we love this ice box as an unexpected way to chill food and drinks whenever we host events.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
