Painted Scroll

This intricately detailed composition is an extensive portrait commemorating and honoring a Chinese imperial leader. Seated atop a blossoming lotus flower, is an emperor draped in fanciful robes and covered in a bold halo. The figure is flanked by an auspicious phoenix, vase and two dieties floating in on clouds providing offerings and prayers. Seated figures are arranged below the emperor each depicted wearing elaborately patterned robes and coiffures in blues and reds with white and black detailing. Among the seated figures, likely the emperor's highly ranked entourage, are attendants standing close by holding various offerings for the emperor such as incense burners, flowers, swords and decorative vessels. Finished with an arch linework of spirals and dots, we love this hanging scroll for its exquisite details and masterful brush strokes.
