Crafted over 150 years ago, this richly painted coffer is a beautiful example of Tibetan artistry. Adding fantastic texture and dimension, the cabinet is precisely decorated with a technique of incised and painted gesso, resulting in a raised texture similar to relief carving. The cabinet front is decorated with imaginative detail, including a scrollwork trim, floral borders and inset panels painted with flower blossoms and celestial dragons. Powerful beings representing the heavens, the fearsome dragons twist and turn amidst swirling clouds, its claws grasping the four wish-fulfilling jewels, symbols of the enlightened mind. Over a century of use has imparted a dark, moody finish and a smooth patina that calls to be touched.

Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art.
