Entitled "Seascape," this painting by Chicago artist Michael Thompson is a departure from the collage work of his ongoing kite series. Rendered in grayscale palette, the painting has a moody setting, unclear if depicting a tumultuous ocean or the eroded peaks and valleys of a mountain range. Much like the natural complexities of a traditional Chinese scholars' rock, the painting invites you to get lost within its landscape of dark of light.

"Adrift in a roiling sea, imagining the swells as land. A distant moon casts a faint glow. The waves assume the appearance of scholar stones. Turmoil reconciled peacefully."
